Web addresses can be very long and cumbersome especially if there are many sub levels within a website.  These links can easily break because of the length of the url.  So online tools were developed to convert a standard URL (a web address) into a reduced format.

To use, you paste the chosen URL into the tool’s input box and it will create an abbreviated version of your URL.  It is this link that you use in your posts and documents.

A shortened URL is very useful.  For example some social media (such as Twitter and LinkedIn) limited the number of characters in postings.  If you use a shortened URL link, it will use less characters and the link will look shorter and neater within the post.  A URL shortener called T.co is used in Twitter as standard.

Some of the URL shorteners also allow tracking and can compile information on how many times the link is clicked and other helpful data.  So if you make a post and use a shortened URL code from a tracking URL shortener tool, then you will certainly be to track exactly how often the shortened link is used by your audience/post reader.

A URL Shortener that doesn’t track is                     Tinyurl.com (no tracking)

URL Shorteners that track data include                  goo.gl     bitly.com

There are many more URL shortener tools to choose online.
